A Bucyrus Erie Model 1850B Electric Shovel was named Big Brutus by Pittsburg & Midway Coal Company. The shovel cost $6.5 million in 1962. 150 railroad cars were required to transport it to Southeast Kansas where it took 52 men 11 months to assemble. Big Brutus began working in Mine 19 in May of 1963. It was the second largest shovel of its type in the 1960-70.
